Report: Merkel cancels meeting with Orbán

History

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán were scheduled to meet on November 12 in Malta on the sidelines of an EU summit on refugees for a private discussion, however, it has just been revealed that Merkel’s delegation canceled the meeting at the last minute, without providing a reason, Hungarian online daily vs.hu reported, citing unnamed sources.

“All the background materials had been printed and prepared, when out of the blue we were informed that there will be no meeting”, one of vs.hu’s government sources reportedly said.

The Hungarian daily said that the meeting of the two leaders on October 22 did not have a  “good atmosphere” and Merkel reportedly told Orbán that he is becoming her “biggest opposition”, despite the two governments being strategic allies.
