Report: Government considers closing refugee camps
The Hungarian government is reportedly planning to close refugee camps that are located in residential areas and transfer refugees to camps equipped with tents, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported today.
According to index.hu, the decision could be made as early as this summer and refugees could be transferred to camps that are far from residential areas. The daily’s sources suggest that the current refugee camps, where people can reside in buildings, are expected to be closed, and all refugees will be transferred to temporary tent camps.
Index noted that Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in May when he was visiting the city of Debrecen that he was committed to closing the refugee camp in the city. He was cited as saying: “We don’t want more [immigrants] to come. Those who are here should go home!”
Orbán reportedly said that the closure of refugee camps have only one obstacle: EU regulations, however, he promised to “fight the battle” on the European level as well, according to index.hu.
