Report: French foreign minister criticizes Hungarian fence
France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius (pictured) called it “scandalous” how some Eastern European countries are behaving in the current refugee crisis, and criticized Hungary’s temporary wire fence on the Serbian border in particular, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.
“When I see that certain European countries do not accept contingents [the distribution of refugees], I believe it is scandalous,” the minister told Europe 1 commercial radio, I-Télé news TV and Le Monde daily in a joint interview, according to Hungarian news portal origo.hu. When queried by a journalist, he added that these countries are in Eastern Europe.
The politician added that “refugees who arrive from war-torn countries need to be accepted, that is what we call asylum,” origo.hu reported. “We need to react; every country needs to react,” the minister reportedly said, adding that “France and Germany have already done so.”
Commenting on the wire fence on the Hungarian-Serbian border, Fabius said he considers Hungary’s solution a “very grave” one, which he believes “does not respect European values”.
The erection of “such a wire fence that wouldnʼt even be used for animals, is a sign of not respecting values,” the minister reportedly said. He said that he believes the “wall” needs to be dissolved and the European Union needs to carry out “serious and strict” negotiations with Hungarian leaders, origo.hu reported.
