Budapest’s General Assembly has agreed to spend HUF 373 mln on receiving refugees, by establishing a central “temporary communal zone” on Verseny utca, thereby moving all refugees out of the capitalʼs transit zones, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported today.

Works on the “temporary communal zone” will begin tomorrow, with construction expected to take 10-12 days, consisting of tents, large enough to accommodate 800-1,000 refugees in total, Máté Kocsis said after the meeting. Index.hu noted, however, that at the moment there are approximately 3,000 refugees camping out in the underpass of Keleti train station alone. Kocsis reportedly noted that once the legislative package is accepted, which Parliament will vote on by the end of the week, the refugee situation in Budapest is expected to ease up.

Budapest Mayor István Tarlós said that “in Syria, weapons are actually being fired, and refugees arriving from there need to be helped.” However, he raised the concern: “How can we tell which of them are Syrians if refugees leave their torn up passports at the border?” Tarlós said he believes that not everyone is in an unfortunate situation, as such “those who can be identified need to be helped, but it makes no sense to help non-refugees, and those who arrive under suspicious circumstances.”
