Report: A thousand protest against the fence

From there, protesters marched to the Hungarian Parliament, where a makeshift fence and stage had already been set up. This small wire fence was quickly torn down as a symbol of support for the refugees trying to cross the border.

Márk Kékesi, the head of Migszol Szeged, as well as other protesters said they knew that the government would continue to build the fence but they believed that this protest would shift thinking  and show that there are other alternatives to the construction of a fence.

Speakers and supporters alike spoke of the need for solidarity in the European union for those seeking safe refuge. “People have lost hope that the government will step up and take responsibility,” Head of Migszol, Amy Roders, said about security for refugees in Budapest.

Situated on the southern border of the European Union, Hungary has been under, what some say, great pressure from migrants. The Hungarian government has recently started building a wire fence on the Serbian border to keep illegal immigrants out of Hungary. However, those who oppose the measure claim that it is refugees, who migrate because their lives are in danger, are the ones who are the ones being kept out.
