Referendum on Olympics bid and Liget Project past first hurdle
Budapest’s voting committee gave the green light yesterday to two separate initiatives, one to halt Budapest’s 2024 Olympics bid and the other to put a stop to the Liget Budapest Project, news portal 168ora.hu reported this morning.
Last week, District XIV mayor Gergely Karácsony submitted a proposal for an initiative against the Liget Budapest Project, a HUF 200 billion investment to build a new museum quarter in the capitalʼs City Park (Városliget).
In an interview with Hungarian state news agency MTI, Karácsony reportedly said that there are 15 days to appeal the committee’s decision on the initiative and in the event that it goes ahead, the collection of signatures could begin as early as January with a referendum to follow in the spring or summer, according to 168ora.hu.
The key questions of the initiative is as follows: “Do you agree that City Park building codes could prevent the construction of new museum buildings in City Park ?"
According to earlier reports, the “NO - Népszavazást az Olimpiáról” initiative, which translates as “Referendum on the Olympic Games” was launched by a committee headed by Katalin Erdélyi, who said they not agree with governing politicians making decisions without public consultation on the HUF 800 billion being spent to host the 2024 Olympic Games in Budapest.
The initiative opposing the Olympics bid, which was also approved by Budapest’s Voting Committee yesterday, was launched with the question: “Do you agree that the Municipality of Budapest should not apply for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Budapest next summer?
