Referendum against EC refugee quotas set for Oct. 2
The referendum planned by the Hungarian government to allow citizens to express opposition to the European Commission’s refugee quota will be held on October 2, based on a decision by President János Áder, according to reports.
In the referendum, Hungarian citizens will be asked to answer the following question:
“Do you want to allow the European Union to mandate the resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without the approval of parliament?”
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the plan to hold the referendum on February 24, and the question was approved by the National Election Committee (NVB) by the end of February.
Early in May, Hungary’s Supreme Court (Kúria) rejected appeals against the NVB’s approval of the referendum question, after which the Parliament passed the initiative on May 10. The Constitutional Court rejected appeals against the initiative on June 21, giving the president 15 days to set the date of the referendum, which falls on a Sunday, per regulations.
