Politico: Jobbik’s emergence is ‘worrisome’
Hungarian ruling party Fidesz’ “immediate political challenger” Jobbik looks “much scarier” as the second most popular party in the country, with “friendly ties to the Kremlin, as well as to the regime in Iran”, according to an opinion piece by Dalibor Rohac on politico.hu entitled “Hungary’s hard right turn”, published yesterday.
According to the piece, it is worrisome that far-right Jobbik is “the most popular political group among young people, according to polls” and it describes party leaders as “savvy and charismatic politicians.”
Referencing a recent meeting with the young deputy leader of Jobbik, Márton Gyöngyösi, the author praises the leader’s “flawless English, eloquence and wits”, and notes that it is “a far cry from the stereotypical image of a brainless neo-Nazi”, which is often attributed to Jobbik members and followers.
