Politicians from several parties including Speaker of the House László Kövér and Greenparty LMP co-leader András Schiffer took part in a debate about current affairs in Hungary at the third Ecopolis Summer Academy in Felsőtárkány, this weekend, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Since the beginning of the 20th century the left has depended on the "hatred of the nation," Kövér said, adding that democracy in Hungary has been going down the wrong path in the past few decades due to a lack of consensus among political parties.

Schiffer said this consensus could be achieved by a greater willingness to listen to each otherʼs arguments, adding that this would serve Hungaryʼs interests best. He commented that economic exploitation was happening on such a global scale it no longer merely threatened individuals but also nation states.

Hungaryʼs role within the EU was also a central theme, with LMPʼs Tamás Meszerics saying the Hungarian government cannot assert the countryʼs interests and he insisted that Hungary is no longer taken seriously by the EU.

Amid what he says is Europeʼs biggest crisis since the Second World War, Socialist István Ujhelyi says parties provide two kinds of responses: either to advocate radical populism or support EU-integration as does his party and LMP.
