Police surround refugees at Kispest railway station
A group of refugees who did not want to take a train to the Debrecen refugee camp began demonstrating at Budapestʼs Kőbánya Kispest train station this morning, bringing a response by scores of police officers, who surrounded a platform crowded with refugees chanting “freedom” and “Germany”. The situation was peaceful but traffic was interrupted in the area.

A public announcement by the Hungarian Police on police.hu stated that Hungary’s Office of Immigration and Nationality had sent a number of refugees with ongoing asylum procedures from Kiskunhalas to Debrecen’s refugee camp, but some refugees chose not to board the Debrecen bound train at the Köbánya Kispest station.
The refugees were demanding to be allowed to go to Germany. According to the announcement by the immigration office, refugees have the freedom to move in Hungary once their asylum procedure has begun, but in the 24 hours following the launch of their procedure, they must present themselves at the refugee camp to which they are assigned.
The refugee crisis in Hungary has drawn international attention in the past weeks. There were numerous reports of refugees demonstrating peacefully outside of Budapestʼs Keleti Railway Station yesterday after police blocked the station entrance prohibiting refugees, even those with a valid train ticket, from entering the station.
