PM’s Office dismisses EU funds freeze report
The Prime Minister’s Office late yesterday dismissed a report by Hungarian online daily porfolio.hu earlier that day which claimed that the European Commission could decide to freeze European Union funding for Hungary after identifying shortfalls in the country’s system for disbursing support. The government body called the allegations a “fiction.”
The management and control system for the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Program, a framework for disbursing EU funds, is under scrutiny, not the system for implementing development policy, the PMʼs Office said, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
Hungary expects the management and control system to remain classified in the "2" category following the assessment, the statement issued by the ministry says. Explaining the classification system, the office said that classifications range from 1-4, where one is the best that is “nearly impossible to get,” while four is the worst, indicating inoperability.
The result of the assessment and the classification are expected only in January, MTI reported citing the statement.
