PM: ‘EU borders must be protected’
The borders of the European Union must be protected from immigrants and the Hungarian government will soon launch a national consultation on the matter, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said this morning in his fortnightly interview with state-owned Kossuth radio.
Orbán said that the government does not want to "transfer the responsibility of making a decision" to the citizens, however, it feels the opinion of Hungarianʼs is important regarding this issue.
The prime minister said that current EU regulations on the matter “are foolish” as they prevent countries from acting upon the issue rather than aiding them in the process. Orbán believes that EU members should regulate individually on the matter.
According to Orbán, Hungary as a Christian country is responsible for troubled people, but the solution is no that “everyone” come to Europe. “We cannot be like a cheese full of holes that allows people to come and go through us,” Orbán said. Instead of welcoming immigrants, those who want to escape should be assisted in remaining in their home countries.
EU heads of state and governments met yesterday at an extraordinary summit held on the topic of immigration, more precisely that the EU is not able to absorb arrivals of immigrants en masse as they pose economic and political threats to the Union, euractiv.com reported yesterday.
Orbán had earlier criticized the flow of economic immigrants to Europe. “We do not want a significant majority with different cultural facets and backgrounds among us. We would like to preserve Hungary as Hungary,” the prime minister was quoted as saying in the beginning of January.
