Parliament orders ministry to challenge EU refugee quota in court

The Hungarian Parliament passed a law yesterday committing the government to go to court next month to challenge an EU plan that would require member states to take in a mandatory quota of refugees, according to reports.

The passage of the law means the Justice Ministry will bring the case before a European Court of Justice in December, according to Justice Minister László Trocsányi. Hungary’s principal issue with the quota is that it grants too much power to national parliaments, Trocsányi said, according to reports.

The Hungarian Parliament earlier passed a resolution to officially register their opposition to the EU’s plan to introduce the quota system, which would require Hungary to accept 2,000 refugees over the next two years, out of the 160,000 asylum seekers currently in Greece and Italy, according to reports. Trocsanyi said he believes that the quota system would be further complicated by an additional provision to accept families looking to reunite, news portal origo.hu reported.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday that “in light of the terror attacks, Brussels cannot question the members’ right to defend themselves, as the compulsory quota system is dangerous, because it would spread terrorism in Europe,” according to MTI.
