“It is with deep shock that I learnt that the Russian Federation’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Ankara had been the victim of a terrorist attack,” the PM wrote in the letter, according to official government site kormany.hu.

“Hungary utterly condemns all forms of terrorism and all manifestations of violence.” Speaking in the name of the government, Orbán assured Putin and the people of Russia of his support, and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim, according to kormany.hu.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told Hungarian news agency MTI yesterday: “It is with shock that we received the news of the attack against the Russian Ambassador to Ankara, which we condemn in the strongest possible terms.” Szijjártó went on to say: “This tragedy is also proof of the fact that action must be taken against every form of terrorism. We assure the family of the ambassador and all Russian citizens of our deepest condolences.”

Andrey Karlov, the Russian ambassador to Turkey, was shot several times as he gave a speech at the opening of an art exhibition by an off-duty police officer who kept shouting, “Don’t forget Aleppo” according to reports. The ambassador died of his wounds in hospital. The Guardian newsite speculates in its latest report that the attack yesterday evening, which was captured on chilling video, appears to be a backlash against Russiaʼs pro-government military involvement in the Syrian civil war.
