Orbán sends condolences to Merkel on truck ‘attack’ in Berlin
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, expressing his shock and extending his condolences to the victims of the Berlin truck “attack” that took place last night in the German capital, according to a report by Hungarian news agency MTI.
“Yesterday, a heavy blow was dealt not only to the people of Berlin, but to the whole of Europe and to our common Christian values,” the Hungarian leader wrote in the letter, according to official government site kormany.hu. “I can assure you that my government condemns every form of terror and violence, and stands ready to cooperate with Germany in order to guarantee the safety of Europe and its citizens,” Orbán said. The leader added: “My Hungarian compatriots and I share the pain of the victims’ family members, and we wish the injured a swift recovery,” according to kormany.hu.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó also sent a letter of condolence to German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier following yesterday evening’s attack. “The people of Hungary strongly condemn the ruthless and vile attack in Berlin, which occurred as Europe is preparing for the biggest Christian holiday,” Szijjártó wrote in the letter, according to kormany.hu.
The truck in question drove through a crowded Christmas fair in the center of Berlin last night, killing 12 people and leaving almost 50 injured, according to reports. German police are said to be treating it as a “probable terrorist attack”.
