Orbán: Schengen could be in danger

Visits

Commenting on the escalating refugee crisis, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote in the guest commentary of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which was published yesterday, that “if we cannot defend our own borders, Schengen may be in danger” .

In the piece, Orbán maintains his view that the failed migration policy of the European Union is to be blamed for the current refugee crisis. He reiterated that Europe is facing another wave of great migration, and “what is currently happening before our very own eyes threatens the whole of Europe with an explosion.”

According to Orbán “Europe needs to understand that those who are being  overrun cannot accept anyone.” Therefore, as we are currently being overrun, the fence that Hungary is building “is important”. He emphasizes that the erection of the fence is in line with the Schengen Codex, as such it is “a European tool”, a “defensive line” and a “physical tool” which should be protected.

“Those who arrive here were raised in a different religion and represent a culture that is different in its very roots,” the prime minister writes. According to Orbán, this is an important concern as “the European identity is rooted in Christianity.”
