Orbán says neighboring countries should fence off Greece

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suggested fencing off Greece to block the flow of migrants and said Hungary is ready to help “those countries that are ready to create a second defensive line south of Hungary”, following yesterday’s summit of Central and South Eastern European countries in Prague, according to reports.

The prime ministers of the Visegrad Four countries – Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland – met with leaders of Bulgaria and Macedonia to discuss joint concerns, including plans to handle the flow of refugees in the region. Orbán reportedly told his counterparts at the meeting that fences should be built along the Macedonian and Bulgarian borders with Greece – effectively cutting that country out of the Schengen zone.

“If it were only up to us Central Europeans, that region would have been closed off long ago,” Orban said, according to a report in express.co.uk. “Not for the first time in history we see that Europe is defenseless from the south; that is where we must ensure the safety of the continent.”

Before the meeting, Nikos Xydakis, the Greek foreign minister, criticized Hungary for not helping his country deal with refugees. “It’s weird that from Budapest – which is attacking Athens – we have not received a single blanket or a tent within the EU Civil Protection Mechanism until the end of January,” Xydakis said, according to euractiv.com.
