Orbán says Europe lost its global position

The European Union is losing its global leading position with the United Kingdom’s pending exit from the bloc, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said yesterday in Warsaw after the summit of the prime ministers of the Visegrad Four countries.

Orbán said he believes the EU has dropped back to the role of a regional player, because the European Commission has given the worst answers in the question of migration possible, and therefore undermined the member’s relationship to the bloc, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.

“Now the EU needs to be told what to do in order to become a global player once again”, the minister said according to the portal. He stressed their meeting established a basis for the possibility of V4 countries offering a joint European program in the EU summit scheduled for September in Bratislava.

“We have made the starting step”, the leader said, but added the next few weeks will demand “serious work”. Orbán stressed that the V4 countries agree on basic values, such as national traditions, Christianity and security, and that this is the Europe that these four countries will be representing in Bratislava.

“The European Union needs to clarify its stance on the issue of migration”, the prime minister said, because currently it does not talk about the matter truthfully and clearly, and it does not state its aim, he added. The leader once again reiterated that the Hungarian stance is clear: “illegal immigration” needs to be stopped outside the area of Europe.
