Orbán: ‘Nobody listened to us’

Many heads of state arriving in Brussels for an extraordinary summit convened by Jean-Claude Juncker yesterday called for the more efficient control of Greek borders, Hungarian news agency MTI reported late yesterday.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that he had voiced his opinion numerous times at European Council meetings that Greece is unable to protect its borders, and that the European Union should jointly do so, however, “nobody listened to us”. Prior to the summit, Orbán said that since Hungary is no longer on the western-Balkan migration route, the country is merely “an observer”.
The Hungarian prime minister reiterated that the primary reason for the current crisis is that “certain countries” in the European Union and the Schengen Zone are “unable to keep their word”, the news agency reported.
Slovenia’s Prime Minister Miro Cerar said that “if we are unable to make concrete steps in the coming days and weeks, then Europe and the European Union will start falling apart”. Commenting on the fact that Slovenia is the smallest country on the refugee route, with 13,000 refugees passing through the country every day, the Slovenian prime minister said that “this is absolutely unbearable … we won’t be able to bear this for weeks unless we receive help”.
Croatia’s Prime Minister Zoran Milanović said his country is “only the fourth link in the chain” and it would not be in such a predicament if other countries did not assist with the flow of refugees.
Gjorge Ivanov, President of the Republic of Macedonia, cited Benjamin Franklin in connection with the current crisis saying: “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately”.
