Orbán: Hungary ‘ready to help’ neighboring countries
Hungary is ready to help countries on the Western Balkan migration route, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told heads of state attending the European Union summit yesterday, in reference to the current refugee crisis, Bertalan Havasi, government press chief, told Hungarian news agency MTI today.

Although Hungary is no longer positioned on the migration route, and only attended yesterday’s summit as an observer, the government feels it is important to help those countries, which are currently on the route, Orbán said yesterday, according to Havasi. Hungary says it is ready to offer technical support to these countries.
Orbán said at the summit that Hungary is keeping its natural borders closed and is adhering to the Schengen Treaty. As such, only those can enter Hungary that are eligible to do so based on EU regulations, Havasi reported.
An action plan containing 17 points was approved yesterday by the countries attending the summit, in order to cope with the “migration crisis”, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
However, Ágnes Angyal, researcher at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and Trade, told state-owned all news channel M1 this morning that the summit should have been held months earlier, and that yesterdayʼs meeting did not reach any major breakthroughs. Commenting on the 17-point action plan, there are some that include deadlines that can be met, she said, but she questioned the effectiveness of these actions.
