Orbán: Hungary not forced to take in ‘migrants’
Hungary is not being forced to accept a mandatory number of asylum seekers, nor is any other European Union member state, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said yesterday after an EU summit in Turkey, Hungarian online daily hvg.hu reported this morning.
Hours before yesterdayʼs summit, Orbán said that Hungary is willing to make a financial contribution but will not accept an EU plan that requires the country to receive additional “migrants”, hvg.hu said.
Hungary needed a guarantee that the plan to be adopted at the summit will not be disadvantageous for Hungary, the prime minister said. “Had things gone wrong with the last plan, Hungary would have been forced to take in migrants involuntarily,” Orbán said, adding that Hungary will support this plan because it will reduce migratory pressure on the EU and Hungary.
Turkey and EU members reportedly agreed to provide €2 billion in support to Turkey and to expedite Turkey’s application to join the EU. Turkey in exchange promised to do more to improve the lives of the many refugees it is harboring, including 2.2 million Syrians, so that they will not want to come to Europe.
Furthermore, Turkey also promised to step up border controls to make it harder for immigrants to leave, and said it would take back asylum seekers who are rejected from Europe.
