Orbán bashes Europe’s political elite

Calling for fundamental change and identifying "elites" as the problem, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke about the immigration crisis, national security, Brexit, and problems of democracy in the Western world in a speech in Baile Tusnad, Romania, on Saturday, according to a report on the official Hungarian government website.

“In Europe the leaders of the right and the left have always come from the same circles,” the report quoted Orbán as saying, explaining his view that the same community of elites has effectively rotated positions of political leadership in the past.

European elites are responsible for a “crisis of democracy” that can only be solved by returning power to nation states, Orbán continued.

Recently, the status quo has been upset and the economic crisis has allowed “political representatives, radicals and populists from outside the usual elite circles” to successfully break into mainstream politics, Orbán said, according to the report.

The prime minister went on to criticize the entry of immigrants from the Middle East into the European Union, and endorsed American presidential candidate Donald Trump’s opinions on how to defeat terrorism, the report added.

At the end of the speech, Orbán concluded that his government’s mission since 2010 to make Hungary a “point of certainty in a world of uncertainty” has proven relevant in the wake of events in recent years, according to the report.
