Opposition reaches compromise on 2014 ballot
After reportage of some testiness between socialist MSzP and Gordon Bajnai’s Együtt 2014 parties have finally reached an agreement on how to coordinate their efforts at the 2014 general elections to oust Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz government.
Accordingly MSzP will enter candidates in 75 and E14 will delegate 31 individual candidates in the available constituencies. However, the two sides, while coordinating, also decided to run seperately and not under the scope of a single group.
The terms say that neither MSzP chairman Attila Mesterházy nor Bajnai will be named as candidate for prime minister but the party receiving the most votes will have the right to name the premier. Aside from potentially bringing harmony to an alliance increasingly suffering in reputation for in-fighting, the agreement will allow both Bajnai, who served as prime minister for 13½ months after the 2009 resignation of Ferenc Gyurcsány, and Mesterházy, who represented MSzP in the 2010 parliamentary elections, to wage forms of independent candidacies.
Others among the opposition were largely disappointed with the deal saying it clearly shows individual ambitions overcame the drive for the greater goal, which is victory in 2014 through a fully unified political opposition.
