Official says Hungary will raise education spending in 2017
The Hungarian government is considering raising spending for higher education to approximately HUF 240 billion in the 2017 budget from this year’s HUF 197 bln, state secretary for education László Palkovics said on Friday, according to reports.

Talking at the meeting of the Hungarian Innovation Association, the allocation for public education is set to rise by about HUF 100 bln in 2017, Palkovics said, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
He added that negotiations between government officials and representatives of Hungarian teachers would continue today.
Hungarian teachers have been vocal in the past few months about issues regarding the country’s education system, demanding that changes be made, including pay increases. They are also calling for a reduction of nationally proscribed compulsory teaching material and fewer compulsory classes for students, as well as the decentralization of Hungary’s education system.
As the government and Teachers’ Union (PSZ) have reportedly not yet been able to come to an agreement on all the points PSZ raised related to changes to the education system, the union has organized a day-long countrywide strike on April 20.
