Official: Hungary not suspending EU asylum rule

Despite earlier news reports, Hungary did not unilaterally suspend the EU regulation on asylum seekers, but instead asked other EU countries to delay the process of sending refugees back as the country is under “enormous pressure”, Péter Györkös, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative, said in Brussels today, origo.hu reported.

“We asked for their patience and solidarity until we would be able to accept refugees and could solve the issues over their placement and catering,” Györkös reportedly said. He added that despite speculation in the international press that Hungary’s decision would set off a chain reaction, this will not be the case as Hungary plans to abide by the Dublin III Regulation.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is scheduled to meet European leaders in Brussels tomorrow at an EU summit. “Hungary is part of the problem, and it wants to be part of the solution as well,” the ambassador said commenting on Orbán’s meetings tomorrow.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade also confirmed that Hungary did not suspend the Dublin III Regulation, Hungarian news agency MTI recently reported.
