Official: Hungarian Uber drivers could lose their license plates

Competition

The Hungarian government is considering a proposal that would result in Hungarian Uber drivers losing the license plate on the cars they use for ride-sharing services if they are caught by officials, state secretary at the National Development Ministry János Fónagy said today, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

According to MTI, the state secretary added that following the request of taxi drivers, who went on a four-day-long demonstration in January against the operations of Uber, the ministry will consider the possibility of banning the mobile application in Hungary.

According to the state secretary, National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) has been carrying out inspections of drivers in order to shutdown unlicensed activities. The work of the office is difficult, however, as Uberʼs Netherlands-based central office has not provided any help, MTI reported. The state secretary reportedly added that the main office of Uber was unwilling to cooperate, so the government needs to consider a harsher response.

The state secretary today had talks with representatives from 16 taxi organizations, the traffic authority, the National Police Headquarters and the Interior Ministry, MTI reported, adding that talks are scheduled to continue in the near future.

Following the demonstration of taxi drivers, the government said it will negotiate with taxi drivers, but will not invite the representatives of Uber to these negotiations. Uber welcomed the government’s willingness to change regulations in the transportation sector, urging that technological advances to be considered.
