Ministry: Government prioritizes stronger health care

History

The Hungarian government is planning changes to health care legislation as it considers it the “governmentʼs priority” to “strengthen” Hungarian health care and make careers in the sector more “attractive”, the Ministry of Human Capacities said today in a press statement. The government is also planning to raise the standard of care, the statement said.

The monthly salaries of healthcare workers are expected to increase by a gross HUF 5,000-15,000 while the salaries of doctors are set to increase by HUF 20,000-25,000 under planned amendments to the related law to take effect on January 1, 2016, the statement says. According to the state secretariat responsible for Hungarian health care, the central budget for 2016 will include an allocation of HUF 12.8 billion for the salary raise, the announcement says.

The Hungarian government is planning to offer gross HUF 151,000 in financial support for a maximum period of five years for young doctors starting their careers who are employed by the state full-time, however, details of this support are not provided in the statement. Offering such support could be an attempt by the government to dissuade young doctors from leaving Hungary for better prospects abroad.

Although the announcement does not address the matter, the ministry’s planned changes could be in reaction to the open letter signed by nearly 800 Hungarian doctors published yesterday, calling for reforms in the Hungarian healthcare sector.
