Lázár urges ‘extraordinary parliamentary session’ on migrants

Hungary’s governing party Fidesz and its junior alliance Christian Democrat KDNP will be asked to initiate an “extraordinary parliamentary session” to debate amendments to the Penal Code in relation to “illegal immigration”, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said yesterday at a press conference, official government portal kormany.hu reported.

“Apart from a technical defense, a legal defense is also necessary,” the minister said, adding that “illegal border crossings” need to be recorded as an individual entry, and punishment of human trafficking also needs to be more severe. He noted that illegal border crossings and causing damage to the "temporary" border fence could be punishable with a 3-4 year prison sentence. Lázár urged parliamentary members to meet by the end of August.

Lázár said that thousands of policemen have been deployed to Csongrád and Bács-Kiskun counties near the Hungarian-Serbian border, because “apart from physical defense”, the police may be needed for situations of the “increasingly aggressive demands caused by illegal border crossers.”

The minister noted that the “first phase” of the fence will be completed by August 31, and the “second phase” will be constructed with “extraordinary speed”.
