Lázár says Hungary could fence off entire Croatian border

The fence that Hungary is building along the Croatian border will be extended to the entire length of the frontier, because the only way to make “those who organize migration” stop entering Hungary is if “there are soldiers, there are police officers, there is court procedure”, Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár said yesterday at his regular weekly press conference.

“We will be able to defend Hungary and Europe on the Croatian border as well,” Lázár said, but he added that the final decision needs to be made by Austria.

“We have not received a definite and clear answer” from Vienna about their position on building a Croatian border fence, Lázár said. He said that Hungary is ready to create a “humanitarian corridor” that lets refugees go through, but it is also ready to close the border.

The minister reiterated that “the influx of migrants is a result of a highly organized effort”, which is proven by the fact that immigrants to Hungary arrive from Croatia and not Serbia anymore.

“This is an important statement, because this confutes western press information that it is a spontaneous flow of refugees,” Lázár said.

Since Hungary built a fence on the entire Serbian border, and stricter border laws entered effect on September 15, refugees who had been arriving to Hungary from Serbia modified their routes towards Croatia.

Currently thousands of refugees keep arriving from Croatia daily. If Hungary fences off the Croatian border, the next easiest route for refugees to enter the Schengen Zone will be to enter Slovenia from Croatia. Hungary’s police forces have agreed to conduct border patrols over the Slovenian-Hungarian border in cooperation with Slovenian Police forces. The main route of refugees goes through Austria towards Germany.
