Lázár on U.S. human rights report: Hungarians donʼt want non-Hungarians living here

History

Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár yesterday dismissed United States Department of State report on ailing human rights in Hungary, saying it mostly focuses on the migrant issue and that Hungarians clearly do not want non-Hungarians living in their country.

In the part of the 2015 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices dealing with Hungary, the U.S. State Department said the “most significant human rights problem during the year was the government’s handling of large numbers of migrants and asylum seekers seeking to transit the country, which was marked by xenophobic rhetoric and a lack of humanitarian aid”.

Commenting on this remark, Lázár said a majority of Hungarians will agree that only Hungarians should live in their country, hvg.hu reports. This remark comes as the Hungarian government collects signatures for a referendum asking citizens to decide on the refugee quota system of Brussels. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in connection with the referendum last week that Hungarians will make a decision whether to allow Brussels to decide on who should live in Hungary and who should not.

As for the section of the report listing anti-Semitism as a problem in Hungary, the cabinet chief said anti-Semitism was the lowest in Hungary among all European countries and that immigration increases the risk of anti-Semitic sentiments. “Try going to the synagogue in France on a Friday evening,” Lázár said, according to reports.
