Lázár calls EUʼs refugee quota ‘antidemocratic’

The European Union’s proposal to revoke Hungaryʼs rights to decide who can live in the country is antidemocratic, Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár said today, commenting on the EUʼs proposed refugee quota system, according to reports.

During his regular weekly press conference, Lázár reiterated the Hungarian governmentʼs standpoint on refugee quotas, stressing that the proposal is “inhuman” and “violates the EU’s basic principles”, according to Hungarian online daily origo.hu. Lázár said that Europe is “living its darkest years ever”.
Lázár stressed that the voice of every Hungarian citizen is needed to “say no to Brussels’ blackmail”, adding that such a proposal is “unacceptable in 21st century Europe”, according to Hungarian online daily index.hu. Lázár was most likely referring to the government-initiate referendum on refugee quotas, which could be held in Hungary this fall.
