Juncker: Death penalty could lead to a break with the EU
“Should Hungary introduce the death penalty, it would be a reason to break-up. It’s one of my most fundamental political principles. The European Union has no room for someone who would introduce the death penalty,” Jean-Claude Juncker (pictured), President of the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, told German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung on Saturday.
At the end of April, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, in reference to the murder that took place in a tobacco shop, that a life sentence is not deterrent enough, as such, the death penalty needs to be kept on the agenda. Orbán confirmed repeatedly that the topic should be discussed, despite members of his own government and the Christian democrat coalition party KDNP disapproving of the idea.
The president of the European commission also commented on his calling the Hungarian prime minister “dictator” during the Eastern Partnership Summit in May. He said he’s been calling Orbán a “dictator” for two years and the fact that he does so is a sign of friendship.
