Immigrant billboards being destroyed

History

Only hours after the installation of Hungarian-language billboards addressed to immigrants and telling them not to take Hungarian jobs, many were destroyed by people painting on words or tearing down the paper, in order to make the messages illegible, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported on Saturday.

The billboards installed by the government, warn immigrants not to take the jobs of Hungarians, to respect Hungarian culture and to abide by Hungarian laws, however, they are all written in Hungarian. Opposition party Együtt (Together) promised that its activists will tear down the billboards as they are “shameful and cynical” propaganda created by the government.

Spokesperson for the government Zoltán Kovács told online daily Origo that destroying the billboards is considered a misdemeanor and authorities will do all that is  necessary to find the perpetrators.

Origo said that the Hungarian government spent HUF 300 mln on the billboard campaign, which is being handled by an advertising agency called HG360 through a public procurement tender. According to Origo, the firm is owned by Csaba Csetényi, who is the neighbor of governing Fidesz Caucus Leader Antal Rogán.
