Hungary issues biometric eID cards

Hungary recently launched a new electronic identification card scheme, which includes biometric and eSignature options, securitydocumentworld.com reported today.

László Tasnádi, state secretary for Hungary’s Interior Ministry, called the launch of the new card a success story, which he expects to “open the doorway to digital public administration”.
Described as a “one-stop card”, the eID combines personal identification including fingerprint data and an electronic signature – if the user opts for these – along with social security and tax identification information.
At the launch, István Ignácz, head of the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services (KEKKH), said the card was developed in a record two months, according to securitydocumentworld.com. No other country has launched a card with such complex security functions within such a short amount of time, Ignacz reportedly added.
Since its launch on January 4, within five business days, a total of 39,204 people have applied for the card.
