Hungarians can vote on refugee quotas in September at the earliest
The referendum on refugee quotas will be held in September at the earliest, leaving enough room for “the leftist opposition” to challenge the referendum in the Constitutional Court, if they choose to do so, Fidesz communication official Bence Tuzson said, according to reports.
Speaking to state-owned all-news channel M1, Tuzson said pursuant to Hungarian laws and legal processes, the referendum cannot be held before September or even October, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.
Tuzson also said that governing party Fidesz has “no doubts about leftist parties challenging” the referendum initiated by the Hungarian government.
The Hungarian Supreme Court (Curia) ruled yesterday that the referendum can be held as it qualified it as a matter Hungarian sovereignty. After the National Economic Committee (NVB) passed the referendum question with nine voting in favor and three voting against, it was brought before the Curia by opposition parties but received a greenlight.
The referendum question translates as: “Do you want the European Union to prescribe the settlement of non-Hungarian citizens into Hungary without the approval of the Hungarian Parliament?”
