Hungarian Police have been ordered to increase controls of pedestrians and drivers for the next two months, in a regime that began due to the increase of refugees and has been stepped up due to the terror attacks in Paris, online daily origo.hu reported.

From today until the end of January, police officers are expected to randomly stop passers-by and drivers, to request their identification, and possibly search their person and/or vehicles, origo.hu said.

Origo.hu added, that the order was first introduced in September in response to the “migration situation” and has been lengthened each month for a period of one month ever since.

Following the Paris terror attacks on November 13, Hungary’s National Security Cabinet decided at an extraordinary meeting to “strengthen defense” in Hungary.

Hungaryʼs Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that same day that Hungary had increased its defense measures, and these will be visible to all citizens at transport junctions, railway stations and airports. “This comes with some inconveniences, therefore I ask people to be understanding and patient, as these measures are important for improving their safety,” the prime minister said.

Since then, major junctions and public transport areas are being patrolled by a pair of police officers, one of them carrying a machine gun.
