Hungarian Parliament passes law that could block Uber

Competition

The Hungarian Parliament today passed a law that allows authorities to temporarily block websites that run “illegal taxi services”. Under this law, the operations of Uber can be blocked, according to reports.

If related authorities find that websites and applications offer “illegal taxi services” in Hungary, this site or application can be blocked for a period of up to 365 days, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. Under the regulations, it would be possible to block the operations of San Francisco-based ride sharing company Uber, according to reports

The blocking of a site or an application can be ordered if the taxi service provider is fined for not having the requisite dispatcher service but still continues to operate, according to Hungarian online daily hvg.hu.

The blocking of apps would be managed and monitored by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), according to hvg.hu.

The amendments are taking effect in 30 days.
