The Hungarian government is targeting an increase of the number of environmentally-friendly vehicles on the country’s roads to 50,000 by 2020 from the current 600, Hungary’s National Economy Minister Mihály Varga said on Friday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the procurement of seven new electric vehicles for the governmentʼs fleet, Varga said the government is committed to making the country a regional leader in the area of electromobility, MTI reported. The seven electric cars, including Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen e-Golf models, are expected to go to the Public Procurement and Supply Directorate, MTI reported.

Data compiled by the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services (KEKKH) show 591 green numbers plates have been issued for electric or hybrid cars so far, since the plates were introduced in the fall, according to Hungarian daily Magyar Idők.

Green license plates are only available for owners of environmentally friendly cars, MTI noted. Owners of such cars are entitled to free parking in certain cities, free electric charging at charging stations and an exemption from the motor vehicle tax, MTI added.

Currently there are more than 100 charging stations operating in Hungary, and the National Economy Ministry is planning to install 150 more charging stations for electric vehicles this year, according to a report by MTI.

The Hungarian government issued a decree in February, requiring charging stations to be installed in cars parks.
