The Hungarian government bought full page advertisements in Lebanese and Jordanian newspapers, on the stands yesterday, in which the government warns readers in Arabic and English that illegally crossing Hungarian borders is a crime and will result in a prison sentence, Hungarian news agency MTI reported yesterday.

Photographs of the advertisements circulated on the internet reveal that the ads contained the following text:

“Hungarians are hospitable, but the strongest possible action is taken against those who attempt to enter Hungary illegally. The illegal crossing of the country’s border is a crime punishable by imprisonment. Do not listen to the people smugglers. Hungary will not allow illegal immigrants to cross its territory.”

The privately-owned Annahar newspaper said it had charged the Hungarian government $17,100 for the one-page ad, a detail which The Wall Street Journal also confirmed.

MTI reported that Lebanon’s population is 4.5 million, while 1.1 million Syrian refugees have been registered in the country. In Jordan, which has a population of 8 million, there are currently 800,000 refugees registered there, the news agency adds.

The Danish ministry responsible for migration issues published similar advertisements in Lebanese papers this month, in an attempt to inform readers that Copenhagen had reduced social aid for refugees by 50%, the news agency said.
