Healthcare workers close bridge in protest

Hungarian healthcare workers held an impromptu demonstration and blocked Budapest’s Erzsébet bridge this morning to protest low wages nurses receive in this country, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported today.

The participants of the flashmob blocked the bridge in its entirety, only letting public transport vehicles cross the bridge from Pest to Buda, the daily added. Demonstrators held banners that read: "Hungary! Do not let your nurses go abroad!"
Mária Sándor, one of the demonstrators, said that the aim of the protest was to let the Hungarian government know that health care in the country is facing “serious problems”, and if the salaries of the sector’s employees are not increased, another wave of doctors and nurses could leave the country.
The Hungarian Police have launched official procedures against eight people in connection with the closure of the bridge, the online daily cited an announcement by the Budapest Police Department.
