Government investigates MP accused of taking kickbacks for EU funding

The Prime Minister’s Office said it will investigate allegations that a Borsod County lawmaker of the governing party Fidesz was involved in corruption regarding winning European Union-funded tenders in both the 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 funding periods, according to press reports.
MP Roland Mengyi has been accused of demanding a HUF 10 million bribe, under the guise of a "constitutional cost," for each winning tender with a value of about half a billion forints, the online version of weekly HVG reported yesterday, citing a report by weekly 168 Óra.
Mengyi, who asked to be referred to as "Voldemort" according to police transcripts of recordings of wiretapped conversations, allegedly also asked companies he helped to win tenders that they should "return" half of the funding received to his constituency.
Nándor Csepreghy, state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, denied any involvement and asked that if his name was mentioned in any of the documents found during the investigation that these should be made public, hvg.hu reported.
