Fidesz MEP: Tavares Report actually written by Göncz

Interview

Three months after the release of the Tavares Report which attracted international attention by calling into question the current government’s record on civil rights, Fidesz MEP/European People’s Party Vice-President József Szájer has levied some serious accusations regarding the paper’s authorship, namely that the work was in fact “secretly prepared by Hungarian socialist MEPs,” among them former foreign affairs minister Kinga Göncz.

The allegation came out in an interview with the daily news outlet Magyar Hírlap in which the MEP proclaims that “The Tavares Report should be called the Göncz Report.”

Szájer further goes on to state that “those who attack our country will be very ashamed of themselves … because a lie, no matter how often repeated, can never become truth.”

Szájer’s statements appear to be building on a comment made by by MEP Edit Herczog ascribing the compilation of data for the Tavares Report as undertaken by Göncz and fellow MSzP MEP Csaba Tabajdi. MSzP chairman/prime minister candidate Attila Mesterházy has denied any involvement by his party’s members in the preparation of the report.

In July, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the European Parliament’s decision to endorse the Tavares Report “represents a real threat to Europe’s future. The recommendations of the report violate the basic treaties of the EU because they attempt to establish an institution not formerly recognized by treaties, an institution that would put one country of the European Union under monitoring and guardianship.”

Five Hungarian MEPs, including Göncz, voted with the majority in the 370-240 vote to endorse the report.
