EU probes Hungarian project for disadvantaged students
In response to a request by Hungaryʼs opposition Socialist Party, the European employment and social affairs commissioner, Marianne Thyssen, said that the European Commission has carried out a sample probe into spending under a scheme for disadvantaged students and awaits an explanation from the Hungarian authorities concerning related anomalies.
Socialist MEP István Újhelyi turned to the Commission following Hungarian press reports that students in the HUF 6 bln program did not receive scholarships on time and in some cases not at all, and a number of school mentors engaged in the project have not received payments owed them. He asked the commission to investigate how the EU funds are being spent.
Thyssen said the commission actively follows the implementation of operative programs and the efficient use of funds to ensure that the targets are being met both legally and appropriately.
