The Israeli Embassy in Budapest issued strong condemnation of Szentgotthárd Mayor Gábor Huszárʼs claim yesterday that “it is highly probable that the Jewish State” was behind the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris.

“The Embassy of the State of Israel deplores in the strongest possible way, the quotes published in the media – of Gábor Huszár, Mayor of Szentgotthárd. As a voice record proves, Mayor Huszár blamed the Jewish State – Israel, as standing behind the horrible terror attacks in Paris,” the embassy statement said. “The Mayorʼs words prove once again, that some people have not learnt from history, as they echo conspiracy theories and negative sentiments against Jews and the Jewish State.”

Huszárʼs comments were recorded during a meeting in which municipal officials voted against building more permanent facilities to house refugees in Szentgotthárd, which borders on Austria. An excerpt of the recording features Huszár saying: “Everyone please accept this statement from me that the happenings in Paris provide clear evidence that in certain business circles – and here I say it – it is highly probably that the Jewish State is operating in the background, and they want Christian Europe to turn against Islam.”
