Embassies call for support of LGBT communities

Initiatives

Embassies based in Hungary issued a press release today to show their support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities of Hungary and their right to express themselves peacefully and lawfully.

“Respect for human rights – including justice, equality, non-discrimination, freedom of expression as well as the non-interference in the practice of these rights – and the rule of law are the foundations upon which democratic states are built. Indeed, international human rights law is grounded on the premise that all individuals are entitled to the same rights and freedoms as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” the press release said.

“Human rights shall apply equally to every human being, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It is the essence of our democratic values. Celebrating diversity is a sure way to promote respect for human rights.” ˜– the press release added.

They expressed “grave concerns” over “acts of violence and discrimination in all regions of the world committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.” The press release added that they “welcome the Hungarian government’s commitment to supporting these rights and their support in June 2011 and September 2014 of the United Nations Human Rights Council Resolutions on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.”

The press release was jointly issued by the Embassies of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and the United States.

In early June, Budapest mayor István Tarlós said that the Budapest Pride parade is “repulsive” and that the “entire phenomenon is unnatural”. In response to a journalist’s query on same-sex marriage, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said earlier that the question “tempts a humorous response”.

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.

We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
