Economy minister, BP mayor hold public discussion on national bus strategy

A public discussion on the national bus industry strategy and issues regarding public transportation in Budapest was held yesterday with National Economy Minister Mihály Varga and Budapest Mayor István Tarlós in attendance, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

István Lepsényi, the state secretary for economic development and regulation, also participated in the meeting.
The Budapest municipal council delayed a final decision to buy Polish buses in May following the Hungarian government’s announcement that it would implement a new national bus production strategy.
The Polish Solaris buses were tentatively planned to replace service along Budapest’s number three metro line which will undergo a renovation soon.
The General Assembly of Budapest’s Municipal Council gave an ultimatum on June 8 regarding the government’s covering of costs to purchase the buses necessary for the city, insisting that if the government did not issue terms of support by July 5, the city would move forward on acquiring the Polish buses.
Mihály Varga announced the finalization of the HUF 30-35 billion national bus production strategy on Monday, June 13. The plan will support the industry over the next three years.
