Deutsch: Disabled athletes should ‘settle for less’
It is a “bad practice” that disabled Olympic athletes receive the same amount of money for their Olympic Games medals as their “able-bodied” counterparts, Tamás Deutsch, the temporary president of the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, said in an interview with Magyar Narancs yesterday.
Deutsch reportedly said that he is not the supporter of “equal” treatment, and that disabled athletes should “settle for less” money awarded for their sports achievements, online portal 444.hu reported. Deutsch suggested that disabled athletes should receive 70% of what their “able-bodied” counterparts are awarded, 444.hu added.
Deutsch replaced former president Zsolt Gömöri, who resigned after the media reported that he was involved in misappropriation of funds. No charges were ever lodged against Gömöri.
