Democratic Coalition says poverty is up
Leftist opposition Democratic Coalition deputy head MEP Péter Niedermüller said that the Hungarian population is getting poorer due to the government’s policies, which may soon lead to social unrest.
Refferring to European figures, the MEP said they indicate a dramatic increase in poverty in Hungary and insisted that social and regional differences were becoming impossible to handle. He said that 3.3 million people live under the poverty line in the country.
According to Niedermüller, while Hungary had the best poverty indicators in 2004, when it joined the European Union, it is now one of the poorest members of the community.
