Construction of temporary border fence underway
Work has begun on the construction of a 150-meter-long “sample section” of a fence along the Hungarian-Serbian border that is intended to keep illegal immigrants out of the country, Hungarian government portal, kormany.hu reported yesterday.
The website noted that “an average of 1,000 illegal immigrants cross the border into Hungary from neighboring Serbia every day”, adding that it has made the task of handling the issue a priority. This year alone the government says it has caught 78,190 illegal border-crossers, many of whom are refugees fleeing persecution in their own countries.
Yesterday morning, the Hungarian Defense Force, aided by police security, carried out the preliminary works required for the fence’s construction taking place just outside the Hungarian town of Mórhalom, southern Hungary, kormany.hu said. Eight military vehicles were brought to the site from the nearby Hódmezővásárhely barracks, to clear the way for the fence’s expedient construction.
News portal hir24.hu reported last week that lawmakers approved amendments to Hungary’s immigration act that would provide legal grounds for building the fence in an expedited procedure that was not subject to any debate. The original decision to build the fence was approved by the Hungarian Government on June 17 of this year.
