Austria says it is ready to build fence if necessary
Austria has made all the necessary preparations to erect a fence along a 100-kilometer stretch of its border with Hungary should another refugee wave arrive, the police spokesperson of the state of Burgenland said, according to a report by Hungarian news agency MTI.
The state has signed contracts with hundreds of property owners to allow the Austrian army and police to patrol a four-meter wide strip of land along the putative fence. The fence would comprise two 50-kilometer stretches in the north and south of Burgenland, which shares a total 300-kilometer border with Hungary.
“If the number of refugees arriving increases, we will be able to raise a fence fast as we have everything prepared,” the spokesperson reportedly told German news agency DPA.
MTI noted that currently about 20–30 refugees arrive per day in Austria through Hungary.
Vienna has tightened its refugee and border defence policy this year, and is only willing to provide sanctuary to a maximum of 37,500 migrants in 2016, subject to the appropriate refugee processes, the report said. To date Austria has only built a 3.7-kilometer fence at its border with Slovenia, where the situation has been reportedly quiet in recent times.
